Functional and specialty coatings
Functional coatings add cleanability, hygiene, heat reflection and durability, confirmed per substrate and volume via RFQ.
Functional options
Performance beyond color.
Anti-graffiti / easy-clean
Surfaces that resist staining and release contaminants for easier cleaning, reducing maintenance cycles.
Antibacterial
Silver-ion (Ag) coating that reduces bacterial growth on the surface; reported 99.9% reduction after 12 hours; formaldehyde-free with good heat stability. Suited to high-contact environments: healthcare, transit, hospitality, retail.
Thermal insulation (Orbit CS 10/100)
NIR-reflective pigments that reduce surface temperature by a reported 10 to 15°C versus standard polyester. Applications: rolling shutters, facade, roofing.
PVDF for aggressive environments
70:30 fluoropolymer, base and clear systems, on aluminum and steel, 2- or 3-coat over primer; resists chalking and color loss; warranty 5 to 20 years by application and environment.

Nanocoating (sol-gel).
A thin-film sol-gel coating, transparent like glass (100 nm to 10 µm), with excellent chemical and weather resistance that can also serve as a primer to improve topcoat adhesion. Possible functions include self-healing, hydrophobic, antibacterial, thermal-insulating and antistatic surfaces.
Ask about availabilityHow each functional coating works
A functional coating adds a specific performance property on top of color and protection. The mechanisms below are general coating science; Orbit's specific performance figures are confirmed per specification.
- Antibacterial coatings incorporate silver ions, a well-established antimicrobial. Silver ions disrupt bacterial cell function and inhibit reproduction on the coated surface, which suits high-contact, hygiene-sensitive environments such as healthcare, transit hubs, hospitality and food retail.
- Thermal-insulation coatings use near-infrared (NIR) reflective pigments that reflect a large share of the sun's heat energy while keeping the desired color. The effect is a cooler surface, which reduces heat transfer into the building or enclosure behind it, useful on rolling shutters, facades and roofing in hot climates.
- Hydrophobic / easy-clean coatings reduce the surface's affinity for water, so rain beads and runs off carrying dirt with it, and contaminants are easier to wash away. The practical benefit is lower cleaning frequency and a surface that stays cleaner between cleans.
- Antistatic coatings reduce the build-up of static charge on the surface, limiting dust attraction and protecting sensitive environments and electronics. They are typically transparent, thin and easy to clean.
- Sol-gel nanocoatings form an extremely thin, glass-like inorganic-organic film, typically transparent and very thin (roughly 100 nm to 10 µm), with excellent chemical and weather resistance. They can also act as an adhesion-promoting primer beneath a topcoat, and depending on formulation can deliver self-healing, hydrophobic, antibacterial, antistatic or thermal-insulating functions.
Is a functional coating right for your project?
Standard color coatings protect and decorate; functional coatings add a performance property the application specifically needs: hygiene in a hospital, lower surface heat on a sun-exposed shutter, easier cleaning on a city facade, or static control in an electronics environment. If your specification calls for one of these properties, tell us in your RFQ and we will confirm availability for your substrate, color and volume.
Functional coating questions.
What are functional coatings?
Coatings that add a performance property beyond color, for example easy-clean, antibacterial, or heat-reflective surfaces.
Does Orbit offer antibacterial coatings?
Yes, a silver-ion coating that reduces bacterial growth on the surface, suited to high-contact environments.
What is a thermal-insulation coating?
A coating with NIR-reflective pigments that lowers the coil's surface temperature in sun exposure, used on shutters, facades and roofing.
Are functional coatings available on any order?
They are specialty capabilities. Confirm availability for your substrate, color and volume via RFQ.
Need a functional coating?
Describe the requirement and environment, we will advise what is feasible. Include your application, substrate (aluminum or steel), alloy, gauge, width, coating, color, quantity and destination. We respond to RFQs within one business day.
